Brief Description of the Project

Society of Hong Kong History was granted funding support from the Trust to publish a book entitled ‘A Collection of Epitaphs of Chinese Elites in Hong Kong’ and to arrange related tours, seminars and publicity on the subject.

The publication aims to present a collection of epitaphs of the Chinese elites in local cemeteries and to study those elites’ activities in and contributions to Hong Kong during the early to mid-20th century. This consolidates the local history materials for academics and, at the same time, to arouse the public’s interests in exploring Hong Kong history and culture, particularly to serve as reference materials for schools teaching Liberal Studies.

Along with the production of the book, field trips and guided tours to cemeteries, such as the Chinese Permanent Cemeteries, St Michael’s Catholic Cemetery and Hong Kong Cemetery, were organised. Seminars were also made for students, community societies and public, while the collection was webcasted in an online radio programme.
